Implementation

Why most construction business courses don’t get implemented (and what works instead)

The short answer

Construction business courses usually fail for three reasons: too much at once, material that is too general for your trade and market, and no one checking your real work. What works instead:

  1. Fix one thing at a time, in order: win, price & protect, deliver, lead.
  2. Use tools you can apply today — contracts, estimating and payment templates.
  3. Get feedback on live quotes and contracts within a day.
  4. Learn from someone who still runs a construction company.

Three reasons courses don’t stick

1. Too much at once

Many programmes give you everything on day one: finance, sales, marketing, hiring, operations, leadership. It looks like value. In practice, an owner who is still on site three days a week can’t change ten things at once, so he changes none. Overwhelm is the most common reason builders tell us a course didn’t work.

2. Too general

Material written for “contractors” in general, or for another country, has to be translated into a UK quote, a UK contract, CIS and VAT, and UK clients. Some of it simply doesn’t apply. The more translation you have to do, the less you implement.

3. Nobody checks your real work

Knowing you should put stage payments in your contract is easy. Writing them into the contract you are sending tomorrow, and holding the line when the client pushes back, is where most builders need help. Without someone reviewing the real document, the old habit wins.

Fix things in the right order

BizMentor installs four blocks, one at a time, in this order:

  1. Win — positioning your company, finding clients beyond referrals, and a clear process for selling projects.
  2. Price & protect — pricing every job for margin, and contracts and payment terms that protect your cash.
  3. Deliver — running jobs on programme, capturing variations, keeping project cash flow under control.
  4. Lead — building a team and a management layer so the business doesn’t depend on you for everything.

The order matters. Hiring before your prices carry a margin just makes a bigger loss. Marketing before you can sell at full price fills your diary with the wrong jobs.

What a good week of implementation looks like

  • One change chosen for the week — for example, adding stage payments to every new quote.
  • The change applied to a real quote or contract.
  • That document reviewed before it goes out (inside BizMentor, every action is reviewed within 24 hours in the community chat or a one-to-one).
  • The result checked the following week: did the client accept, did the cash arrive earlier?

Use real tools, not theory

The fastest way to implement is to start from a document that already works. BizMentor members get the Craftex document library — client and subcontractor contracts, payment and valuation templates, estimating templates and project and H&S documents — to add their logo to and use. If you want to start on your own, our free guides and spreadsheets include trade-specific Budget and Job Costing tools for electricians, plumbers, roofers, decorators, plasterers and carpenters.

Frequently asked questions

Are construction business courses worth it?

They can be, if the material is specific to your market and you get help applying it. On their own, courses rarely change much because nobody reviews your real quotes and contracts.

What should a builder fix first in the business?

Usually pricing and sales: make sure every quote carries your overheads and profit, and that you can win work beyond referrals. Hiring and systems come after the margin is right.

How long does it take to see results from business mentoring?

It depends on your starting point and how quickly you implement. Changes to pricing and sales can show up on the next quotes you send; structural changes such as hiring take months.

BizMentor provides business education and mentoring for construction and trade business owners. Client results are individual results and are not typical. We do not promise or guarantee any specific income, profit, turnover or project size. Nothing here is financial, legal or tax advice.
