Is Bark Worth It for Tradesmen? Credits and Maths

The short answer

It can be, for £10K–£50K jobs, if you pick real projects, reply fast and present every quote properly. Expect to price around 10 jobs to win one. On small jobs, the credits and unpaid quoting hours eat the profit.

  1. You pay per lead, not per month. A Bark credit costs £1.80 (June 2026) and each lead shows its credit price before you reply.
  2. Judge it on cost per won job. Credits per lead × leads per win, plus your unpaid quoting time.
  3. It works on £10K–£50K jobs. Pick real projects, reply fast and present the quote on a call or in person.
  4. Credits expire after 3 months. Unused credits aren't refunded; returns for bad leads are requested within 14 days.

Is Bark worth it for tradesmen? For the right jobs, yes. Below is what it costs, the maths per won job and how to make it pay. If you'd rather build work you don't have to buy, book a free strategy call.

Bark is worth it for tradesmen on £10K–£50K jobs

Bark is the one lead platform I still rate for growing trade firms. For £10K–£50K jobs it's the cheapest place to learn to sell.

It works on three conditions. Reply fast. Skip people who only want a free estimate. Present every quote on a video call or in person, never as a PDF in an email.

Expect to price around 10 jobs to win one. On small domestic jobs that ratio kills the profit. On a £20K refurbishment it doesn't.

From Sviat

Bark is the cheapest way to learn to qualify, price and sell. Pick real projects only, respond fast and expect to price about 10 to win 1. Have a decent website first: the client will look you up before they reply.

What Bark costs in 2026

Bark doesn't charge a monthly fee. You buy credits and spend them to contact the customers you choose. From Bark's own pages:

  • Price per credit £1.80 (Bark help centre, June 2026). Bigger packs cost less per credit.
  • Credits per lead Set by the service and the size of the job. You see the cost before you reply.
  • No commission You pay once to respond. Later messages with that customer are free.
  • What you get The customer's phone number and email.
  • Expiry Credits bought from 1 November 2025 expire after 3 months.
  • Refunds Unused credits aren't refunded. Auto top-up buys more when you run low.
Mistake to avoid

Leaving auto top-up on while you test. Switch it off until you know your cost per won job, or a slow month quietly turns into a big bill.

Bark leads are real, but not all are ready to buy

Most Bark leads are real people. The problem is that many aren't ready to buy. Some want a price to compare with a builder they've already chosen. Some are months away from starting.

That's why your filter matters more than the platform. Before you spend credits, look for:

Rear of a semi-detached house before an extension
A real project has a site, a budget and a start date. Ask for all three before you spend credits.
  • A clear job: what, where and roughly how big.
  • A budget range that fits the work.
  • A start date in the next 1–3 months.
  • Photos or drawings, or a willingness to send them.

If a lead doesn't meet Bark's quality standards, use the Credit Return Request Form within 14 days of buying it. Bark aims to reply within 48 hours, and returns are at its discretion.

The maths: cost per won job, not cost per lead

A lead price means nothing on its own. What counts is how much you spend to win one job, and whether that job's profit covers it.

Step Formula
Cost per lead Credits on the lead × price per credit
Cost per won job Cost per lead × leads per win
Real cost Add your unpaid hours to visit and quote

Worked example (example figures, not a Bark price): 20 credits a lead at £1.80, 1 win in 10 leads, 3 hours per quote.

Item £20K refurbishment £900 repair
Credits per won job £360 £360
Quoting hours 30 30
Gross profit on the job £5,000 (25%) £270 (30%)
Left after credits £4,640 Loss of £90

Same platform, same win rate. On the small job you work for nothing. That's why Bark only makes sense when the job is big enough.

How to make Bark pay: 5 rules from our clients

These are the rules I give clients who use Bark:

  • Pick real projects only. £10K–£50K, a clear scope, a start date.
  • Respond fast. Call the same hour, while the customer is still comparing.
  • Qualify on the first call. Budget, timing, who decides. No budget, no visit.
  • Present every quote live. On Zoom or at the kitchen table, line by line.
  • Track every lead. Credits spent, quotes sent, jobs won, profit per job.

If you win fewer than 1 in 10, look at how you price and present before you buy more. See how to write a quote that wins high-value jobs and how to follow up a quote.

Bark vs Checkatrade vs MyBuilder vs Rated People

Each platform charges in a different way. Here are the published terms, checked on 20 October 2026:

Platform How you pay Commitment Best for
BarkCredits per lead, £1.80 a creditNone, credits expire in 3 months£10K–£50K jobs, if you sell well
CheckatradeMonthly membership, from £30 + VAT (no leads on basic)Usually a fixed 12-month term, auto-renewsDomestic trades in busy areas
MyBuilderShortlist fee, typically £2–£35 a jobNone, but you pay whether you win or notFilling gaps with small domestic jobs
Rated PeopleNow through Checkatrade Group, from £30 a monthFixed lead plan runs 12 monthsSame as Checkatrade

Rated People has changed. It joined Checkatrade Group on 18 September 2026. Old memberships ended, and members now sign up with Checkatrade to keep getting its jobs. If you were paying Rated People, check what you're now signed up to.

For the full breakdown, read whether Checkatrade is worth it for builders and whether MyBuilder is worth it.

When to stop paying for leads

Give any platform a fair test: 30 days and a fixed budget you can afford to lose. Then decide on your own numbers.

This is for you if

  • Firms that can price, visit and present within days
  • Owners chasing £10K–£50K jobs who want to practise selling
  • New firms with no contacts yet and some time to quote

It’s not for you if

  • Anyone who can't yet say what one job earns in gross profit
  • Builders chasing £100K+ projects, fit-outs or design & build
  • Firms that already win most work from referrals

Stop or cut back if, after 30 days, the credits per won job are more than a quarter of that job's gross profit. Or if you're quoting every evening and still winning less than 1 in 10.

If you've already spent thousands on leads with little to show, read paying for leads that never convert.

What to build instead: work you don't pay for

Bark rents you enquiries one credit at a time. The work that grows a company comes from people who send you jobs again and again. These are the channels we use at Craftex:

  • Past clients and contacts. Adam, a builder I mentored, signed £91,796 of work in 8 days by calling people he already knew.
  • Architects and designers. Adam & Ali's £528K project came through an architect.
  • Main contractors. One good relationship can replace a year of bought leads.
  • Your own website and Google profile. Enquiries that come only to you.

Individual results, not typical or guaranteed.

That's what we build with owners one-to-one. I run Craftex today and work on each owner's own pipeline, aiming for results in about 4 months, not years. Read how to get construction work in the UK for all 22 channels.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Bark worth it for tradesmen?

It can be for £10K–£50K jobs if you pick real projects, reply fast and present every quote on a call or in person. Expect to price around 10 jobs to win one. On small domestic jobs the credits and quoting time usually swallow the profit.

How much does a Bark lead cost?

Bark sells credits. Its help centre gave the price as £1.80 per credit in June 2026, cheaper in bigger packs. Each lead costs a number of credits that depends on the service and the size of the job, and you see that cost before you reply.

Are Bark leads fake or real?

Most are real people asking for quotes, but not all are ready to buy: some only want a price to compare. If a lead doesn't meet Bark's quality standards, you can ask for the credits back within 14 days; returns are at Bark's discretion.

Can I get a refund on Bark credits?

Unused credits can't be refunded, and credits bought from 1 November 2025 expire 3 months after purchase. For a bad lead, use Bark's Credit Return Request Form within 14 days of buying it.

Is Rated People still running?

The brand and website are now part of Checkatrade Group (from 18 September 2026). Old Rated People memberships ended. To keep getting jobs from the platform, tradespeople sign up with Checkatrade, from £30 a month.

Which is better, Checkatrade, MyBuilder or Rated People?

They charge differently. Checkatrade is a monthly membership, usually on a 12-month term. MyBuilder charges a shortlist fee per job with no membership. Rated People now runs through Checkatrade. All three are built for homeowners hiring for domestic jobs.
