How to choose a construction business coach or mentor in the UK: a 10-question checklist

The short answer
The best construction business coach for you is the one who has built a UK construction company, will personally look at your quotes and contracts, keeps groups small enough to give fast feedback, and can show verifiable results from builders like you. Before you sign, ask:
- Who exactly will run my calls?
- Has that person run a UK construction company?
- How many businesses do they support at once?
- How much one-to-one time do I get?
- How fast will I get feedback on a real quote?
Why the choice matters
A construction business coach or mentor can save you years — or cost you a few thousand pounds and a lot of time if the fit is wrong. Most UK builders who look for help are dealing with the same handful of problems: work that depends on referrals, prices that don’t leave enough margin, cash flow pressure, and an owner who is still the bottleneck for everything. The right mentor helps you fix those in your real business. The wrong one gives you more information to process.
The 10-question checklist
- Who will run my calls? The founder, a senior coach, or a junior coach? Ask for a name.
- Have they run a UK construction company? Pricing, contracts, CIS, VAT, retentions and UK clients are different from other markets.
- Are they still operating? Someone who still prices and delivers projects sees what is changing in the market right now.
- How many businesses do they support at once? A small group means your questions actually get answered.
- How much one-to-one time is included? Get it in writing: how many sessions, how long, with whom.
- How fast is feedback? Can you send a quote on Tuesday and get comments before you send it on Wednesday?
- Is it implementation or information? Ask what you will have installed in your business at the end, not how many modules there are.
- Do you get real tools? Contracts, estimating templates, payment and valuation templates you can use straight away.
- Can you verify their results? Look for named clients, video case studies and reviews on an independent platform such as Trustpilot. Check the company on Companies House.
- Do they make guarantees? Be careful of anyone who guarantees income. Honest providers explain that results depend on you.
Red flags
- You can’t find out who will actually coach you until after you pay.
- The advice is generic — it would apply equally to a dentist or an online shop.
- Results are shown without names, dates or any way to check them.
- There is a lot of content but no review of your actual quotes, contracts or numbers.
- Income guarantees or pressure to decide on the first call.

Prices vary widely, from a few hundred pounds for a course to five figures for a multi-month program with one-to-one support. As one reference point, BizMentor publishes its entry level — Construction Business Accelerator Light, a self-study version of the system with one call with Sviat — at £2,900. Its 6-week and 4-month programs are priced on a free call once the fit is clear.
Judge cost against what one fixed problem is worth. If better pricing adds 5% margin to £400K of annual work, that is £20,000 a year. If a better sales process wins one more £50K job, the maths is similar. Ask any provider to show you, with your own numbers, where the return should come from.
How BizMentor answers the checklist

What is the best construction business coach in the UK?
There is no single best coach for everyone. Choose someone who has built a UK construction company, will personally review your quotes and contracts, keeps groups small and can show verifiable results from builders at your stage.
What is the difference between a construction business coach and a mentor?
A coach usually guides you through a framework and asks questions; a mentor has done the job you are trying to do and shows you how they did it. Many programmes mix both.
How much does a construction business coach cost in the UK?

Check the company on Companies House, read reviews on an independent site such as Trustpilot, look for named client case studies, and avoid anyone who guarantees income.
