Mentoring

One-to-one mentoring vs group coaching for builders: which actually gets implemented?

The short answer

For most UK builders, one-to-one time with an experienced operator gets more implemented than group coaching or courses alone, because it deals with your actual quotes, contracts and numbers. Group calls are useful for learning from peers. The most effective set-up combines both:

  1. Small groups (not hundreds of members).
  2. Regular one-to-ones with the person who built the system.
  3. Fast feedback on real work — within a day, not a week.
  4. One change at a time, not a full curriculum at once.

Why courses rarely change a construction business

Builders are practical people. Most of the ones we speak to have bought something before: a course, a book, a programme. The pattern is familiar — lots of material, a few good ideas, and then Monday arrives with a job running late, a client who won’t pay and three quotes to send. The material goes into a folder.

The problem is not the information. It is that a construction business is specific: your trade, your area, your clients, your team, your cash position. General material, however good, still has to be translated into “what do I change in this quote”. That translation is the hard part, and it is exactly what a course can’t do.

What one-to-one time is best for

  • Reviewing a quote or tender before it goes out — scope, exclusions, margin, payment terms.
  • Contract and variation questions on a live job.
  • Pricing decisions — when to walk away, when to hold your price.
  • Hiring decisions — who to hire first and what they should take off you.
  • Prioritising — deciding the one thing to fix this month.

What groups are good for

Groups work well for seeing how other builders solve the same problems, for accountability, and for motivation. Inside BizMentor’s private community members post their wins and questions, and Sviat shares real projects from his company Craftex — deals below his internal threshold — that members can price and take on. The limitation of large groups is airtime: when a call has dozens of businesses on it, most people never get their own numbers looked at.

The combination that works

BizMentor is built as a combination. The 4-month Construction Business Accelerator has a weekly live group call with Sviat plus a 30-minute one-to-one every month, with a maximum of 20 clients. The Main Contractor Accelerator has two one-to-ones a month and a maximum of 10 clients. Between calls, every action is reviewed within 24 hours in the community chat or one-to-one, and members install one block at a time in their real business rather than working through a curriculum.

Whatever you choose, look for the same ingredients: small numbers, a named person who has done it, fast feedback, and one change at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is one-to-one business mentoring worth it for builders?

For most builders who are already trading, yes — because it deals with real quotes, contracts and numbers. The value usually comes from fixing pricing, sales and cash flow on live work, not from new information.

How often should I meet a business mentor?

Monthly one-to-ones with weekly group calls and fast feedback between sessions work well for most owners. Owners running larger projects may need two one-to-ones a month.

Can group coaching work for a small construction business?

Yes, if the group is small enough that you get your own questions answered and the person leading it has run a construction business.
